The Faculty

Donald Neuen, M.M.
Internationally acclaimed director Donald Neuen has been referred to as “the great choral conductor of his generation” by musicologist Julius Herford. As distinguished professor and director of choral activities at UCLA, Neuen heads one of the most respected graduate choral conducting programs in the U.S.

Hailed by Don Hinshaw as “the driving force of choral music education in America,” Neuen also conducts the Crystal Cathedral Choir at the landmark Crystal Cathedral in Garden Grove, CA, and appears weekly on their internationally-televised “Hour of Power” broadcast.

A student and prot&ecaute;g&ecaute; of Robert Shaw, Neuen established the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra Chorus and served as assistant conductor and director of choral activities for the Atlanta Symphony Orchestra. Maestro Neuen has made it his personal mission to build on the standards of excellence first set by Shaw.

Neuen has also served on faculties at the universities of Wisconsin, Tennessee, Ball State, and Georgia State. In addition, he has conducted numerous orchestras around the world and conducted clinics in Asia, Canada, Europe, and Mexico, as well as nearly every state in the U.S.

Charlene Archibeque, DMA
Archibeque recently retired after thirty-five years as professor of choral music at San Jose State University (SJSU). Under Archibeque, the SJSU Choraliers recorded seven professional compact disks and completed 16 concert tours throughout Australia, Europe, and Mexico.

In her music career, Archibeque has taken the role of headliner, panelist, presenter, speaker, and clinician worldwide. She has conducted in Carnegie Hall, the Kennedy Center, Royal Albert Hall, the Berlin Philharmonic, and Schauspiel Hall.

Archibeque has also appeared on the faculty for Westminster’s “Five Perspectives,” twice for the Santa Fe “Perspectives,” the Four Corners Workshops, and for both the Tennessee and Oklahoma Fine Arts Institutes. Her areas of expertise include conducting and rehearsal techniques, vocal training in the choral rehearsal, musicianship skills, choral diction, blend and tone quality, and performance practices with a historical perspective.

Archibeque remains active in the choral field as a clinician, guest conductor, adjudicator, and teacher. Her choral workshops around the world are acclaimed as “practical, comprehensive, and insightful.” Her workshops at SJSU and around the world have attracted thousands of participants. Her rehearsals are commended for keeping singers intellectually involved, inspiring them to achieve deep levels of communication, and training them to magically tap in to their fullest capacity.
