Profile
David Beatty has been a freelance studio trombone player in Los Angeles since 1978. His performance credits include music for motion pictures, television, commercials, and CDs. His trombone playing can be heard on many albums, including those of Ralph Carmichael, David T. Clydesdale, Andrae Crouch, Brian Duncan, Promise Keepers, Ron Kenoly, and Don Moen. His big band credits range from the Bill Watrous Refuge West Big Band to the Glenn Miller Orchestra to his current position as first trombonist with the Ralph Carmichael Big Band. He has also performed in a number of symphony orchestras in Southern California as well as played for many theatrical productions. In addition to his performance credits, he is a composer, arranger, and music copyist. He is also in demand as an adjudicator and clinician for jazz clinics and festivals in Southern California. He has studied trombone with Miles Anderson, Roy Main, and William Adam. He is a former jazz improvisation student of Charlie Shoemake. Beatty holds a Bachelor of Music from California State University, Northridge; and a Master of Music in Commercial Music Performance from California State University, Los Angeles.
Beatty has taught Music Fundamentals, Music Theory, Music Business, History of Jazz, History and Literature of Commercial Music, Songwriting, Score Preparation, Introduction to Music Technology, and Jazz Improvisation. His ensemble experience includes directing Trombone Choir, Brass Choir, Jazz Combo, and Jazz Big Band. He is currently teaching in the commercial music area and directing the APU Jazz Ensemble.
