APU Alumnus Earns Lilly Graduate Fellowship
June 2, 2008
AZUSA, Calif. –
Azusa Pacific University alumnus and Oxnard, Calif. resident Nathan Kilpatrick was 1 of 15 scholars nationwide selected to be a part of the Lilly Graduate Fellows Program. Along with the other Fellows, Kilpatrick will enter a Ph.D. program or equivalent this fall in preparation for a future teaching career at a Christian university.
Over the next three years, Kilpatrick and his cohort will learn alongside one another through group readings and discussions. Additionally, two senior mentors help facilitate group learning and growth. Fellows also attend four conferences over the course of the program to learn from others specializing in their field of study. The fellowship also includes $3,000 annually to support educational expenses.
Kilpatrick, who graduated from APU in 2006 with a B.A. in English, expressed excitement about this opportunity. “This is a rare opportunity to enter into doctoral studies already connected to a community of scholars who, while great at their respective academic field, are also intentional about honoring God through their scholarship,” he said. “Through this experience, I hope that my scholarship and academic abilities will be sharpened and challenged by intelligent, young scholars who will be able to critique and refine my work.”
The Lilly Fellows Program, part of the interdisciplinary honors college of Valparaiso University, Ind., seeks to strengthen the bridge between Christianity and the academic vocation at Christian colleges and universities. All Lilly Fellow nominees are candidates for Ph.D., MFA, Th.D., or equivalent programs that will lead to future careers in teaching. In addition, the program sponsors seminars, conferences, and mentorships designed to enhance the overall mission of the fellowship.
