Kathaleen Reid-Martinez Named New Vice President of Distance Learning

December 12, 2006

AZUSA, Calif. – President Jon R. Wallace, DBA, announces that Cleveland, Tenn. resident Kathaleen Reid-Martinez has been named vice president for non-traditional and experiential learning at Azusa Pacific University.

Reid-Martinez’s responsibilities include providing leadership to three primary areas: International Centers and Programs, APU Online, and the Center for Adult and Professional Studies (CAPS). This position not only signifies the importance of these areas, but provides focused leadership to online education, internationalization, and CAPS.

“Dr. Reid-Martinez brings a wealth of experience as an academic leader, and roles in international higher education and mission outreach programs,” said David Wright, Ph.D., member of the search committee and dean of APU’s School of Theology. “She is a deeply committed follower of Christ, accomplished administrator, and innovative leader in higher education.”

According to Provost Michael M. Whyte, Ph.D., this new position emerged from a need for a leader to spearhead strategic areas for growth, as identified by the president and university administration, and to enhance online education for increased accessibility and affordability to the widest number of people. In addition, this position allows for oversight among all facets of the university’s programs offered to non-traditional audiences, off-campus courses and programs, and online program offerings. As part of the academic vision, a focus on intentional internationalization reflects a desire for all students to have the opportunity to spend a semester abroad, as well as provide a transformative experience for students of other countries.

Reid-Martinez brings expertise in online learning globalization, leadership, and communication to the role. She earned a B.A. in English from the University of Maryland, and an M.A. in Mass Communication and Ph.D. in Speech Communication from the University of Denver, Denver, Colo. From 2004-06, she served as vice president for administration at the Church of God Theological Seminary in Cleveland, Tenn., and from 1997-2004, as dean and professor for the School of Government and the Center for Leadership Studies at Regent University, Virginia Beach, Vir.

Featured in TIME magazine and ranked as one of the nation’s best by U.S.News & World Report and The Princeton Review, Azusa Pacific is a comprehensive, Christian, evangelical university, committed to God First and known for excellence in higher education.
