February Concerts at APU

Friday, February 1
Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series
Classical pieces by various composers including Igor Stravinsky and Joseph Horovitz will be performed by clarinetist Ken Grant, Eastman School of Music, and pianist Duane Funderburk, dean of the School of Music, conducted by Alexander Koops, APU. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Munson Recital Hall, located on APU’s East Campus at 901 E. Alosta Ave., Azusa. Admission is free.

Saturday, February 2
Symphonic Band
Clarinetist Ken Grant from the Eastman School of Music will perform Dana Wilson's new clarinet concerto, Liquid Ebony under the conduction of Alexander Koops. APU’s Percussion Ensemble will accompany Grant. The concert takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Munson Recital Hall.

Monday, February 11
Faculty Recital Series
The program features Teri Mason Christian, flute, and Joel Clifft, piano. A wide variety of masterworks for the flute and piano will be played ranging from Baroque to Jazz. This duo has performed together for many years. The recital includes works from J.S. Bach, Claude Debussy, and Mike Mower. The concert takes places at 7:30 p.m. in Munson Recital Hall.

Thursday, February 14
Swing, Valentine, Swing!
The third annual Valentine's Day dinner and dance will feature the APU Jazz Ensemble directed by David Beatty. All proceeds benefit the jazz and commercial music program at APU. For ticket information, please call (626) 815-6000, Ext. 3580. Prices are $65 per person/$120 per couple. The event is held at Pomona Valley Mining Company at 6 p.m., located at 1777 Gillette Rd., Pomona.

Monday, February 18
Distinguished Visiting Scholar Series
Charles Stegeman, violin, from Duquesne University, Robert Becker, viola, APU School of Music, Marek Szpakiewicz, cello, USC School of Music, and Duane Funderburk, piano will be performing a number of pieces including Piano Quartet in C Minor No. 1, Op. 115 by Gabriel Fauré and Octet in f Major, D. 803 by Franz Schubert. The concert takes places at 7:30 p.m. in Munson Recital Hall.

Tuesday, February 26
Wind Ensemble
Conducted by Donavon Gray, the program includes Raise the Roof by Michael Daugherty. APU senior percussion major Tyler Smith will be featured along with wind ensemble music by P. Sparke, R. King, and Milner that will delight all ages. The event takes place at 7:30 p.m. in Munson Recital Hall.
