APU History Class Introduces California Gold Rush Teaching Tool

WHO:
Azusa Pacific University’s Center for Academic Service Learning and Research; local teachers, principals, and administrators

WHAT:
The Center for Academic Service Learning and Research, along with six history majors under the direction of former APU history professor Thomas F. Andrews, have prepared a teaching unit on the California Gold Rush, designed to meet the content needs for fourth grade teachers. A reception will take place to introduce the teaching unit and inform teachers on how the material may be implemented in the classroom.

Dec. 7, 4:30-6 p.m.

WHY:
The California Gold Rush remains a quintessential event that forever changed history. Students enrolled in a historical themes class wanted to tackle the Gold Rush in a new and exciting way to help educate the younger generation.

FACTS:

  • Attendees will receive a book on the Gold Rush and be entered in a drawing to win various books, including John Doble’s Journal and Letters from the Mines, valued between $75-100.
  • The teaching unit covers several Gold Rush topics including “California in 1848 when Gold was Discovered,” “Mining for Gold,” “Life in the Mining Camps,” and “Life Outside the Mining Camps.”
