Debate Team Wins in Nebraska
January 26, 2006
AZUSA, Calif. –
In their first tournament of the semester, the Azusa Pacific University forensics team captured a second place team finish at the Sleet Invitational in Seward, Nebraska. The team was led by senior political science major Caroline Mello and senior communication studies major Greg Pereira, who together went undefeated and claimed first place in debate.
"It has been several years since we have had a team take first place in debate," said Konrad Hack, APU director of forensics. "This was Greg and Caroline's first debate tournament together, and I'm excited to see how they continue to do in future tournaments."
Contributing to the Cougars' success were juniors Tim Kamerrmayer and Hans Vodder, who earned a spot in the semi finals round, while senior Larissa Alarcon and junior Guiseppe Algana made it to the quarter finals. "We found great success as a team this weekend," said debate coach Joey Mavity. "Everyone contributed to our overall performance, and I am pleased with where we are as a team."
The Cougars competed against teams from across the nation, including Creighton University, University of Missouri, Truman State University, University of Nebraska, and University of the Pacific. APU's Speech and Debate team competes next on February 3 at the Point Loma Invitational in San Diego, Calif.
