APU Receives Grant to Enable Nursing Students to Serve Overseas

December 7, 2006

AZUSA, Calif. –

Azusa Pacific University received a generous $50,000 grant from the Butterfield Memorial Foundation to support nursing scholarships for nursing students who have a passion to serve overseas.

APU aims to alleviate the great need for educated medical professionals overseas. The scholarship money will be awarded to nursing students who have participated in medical outreach ministry and who are willing to commit to serving a minimum of two years abroad after graduation. With today’s health issues expanding throughout the world, APU’s goal is to encourage and prepare students to serve globally.

“The School of Nursing seeks to promote the concept of vocation in nursing by developing professional knowledge and a commitment to ministry and service, locally and globally” said Aja Tulleners-Lesh, Ph.D., dean of APU’s School of Nursing. “Over the years, a number of our students have continued upon graduation to work in countries torn by war, poverty, and crippling illnesses such as Uzbekistan, Afghanistan, and Haiti. The Butterfield Scholarship provides an opportunity to develop and support nursing students who early on express a desire to answer God’s calling and use their nursing skills for the benefit of the poor and vulnerable in all areas of the world.”

The Butterfield Memorial Foundation is a Christian charitable organization based in Oklahoma City and affiliated with the Free Methodist Church of North America. The organization’s grant will help to increase the number of nursing students and graduates who volunteer abroad, as well as increase the number of APU nurse missionaries who commit to long-term service overseas. Through this grant, APU plans to help nursing students by decreasing the average amount of student loans, freeing graduates to enter the mission field.
