What is my responsibility as a borrower of APU library materials?
It is the borrower's responsibility to:
- know when material is due to be returned.
- return or renew material on or before the due date.
- exercise care in handling all library materials.
Library borrowing privileges may not be transferred to another person, although faculty members may have their teaching assistants linked to their library records for the purpose of conducting research or preparing for classes. The library reserves the right to require a photo ID at any time. Borrowers who abuse library policies or disrupt library service may have their library privileges revoked.
It is the borrower's responsibility to notify the library immediately of any change of address or phone number. The library uses the University's apu.edu e-mail accounts for its primary communication resource - for notification of available materials, overdue notices, and late fees. It is the borrower's responsibility to forward mail from these accounts to commercial e-mail accounts if they are used. Lack of mail delivery does not excuse the borrower from responding to any notices. Mail returned to the library, or e-mail that "bounces" back to the library's automated notice system, due to failure of a borrower to provide timely and adequate mail or e-mail addresses may result in the suspension of borrowing privileges until the issue is resolved.
The library will not release personal borrowing information about any library user to any other individual or organization unless required to do so by law or by University policy.
How can I obtain library borrowing privileges?
Current students are automatically entered into the Library database. If the student is not in the database, an "APU Library Patron Registration" form, available at the circulation desk, must be completed and presented with a photo ID and proof of student, faculty, or staff status.
How do I borrow library materials?
Borrowers must present a valid APU ID card or a photo ID to check out materials. Date due bookmarks are available at the Circulation Desk. APOLIS2, the Library Catalog, will also indicate the due date.
Students may check out most materials for four weeks. Faculty, staff, and doctoral students may check out most materials for ninety days. Media and Reserve materials have shorter loan periods.
How do I return or renew library materials?
Library materials must be returned or renewed on or before the due date. Book drops are located at the entrance to each library. In addition, a return depository is located at the sidewalk leading up to the Darling Library. Materials may be renewed at the Circulation Desk at the Stamps, Marshburn or Darling libraries in person or by phone. Regional Center borrowers will find additional information on returning and renewing materials below. Overdue materials and materials with holds cannot be renewed. To renew by phone, please call:
| Marshburn Circulation | (626) 815-6000 ext. 3847 |
| Darling Circulation | (626) 815-6000 ext. 5060 |
| Stamps Circulation | (626) 815-6000 ext. 5613 |
| Regional Center borrowers | (626) 815-6000 ext. 3272 |
The item I need is checked out. How can I get the item?
An item requested by another borrower or needed by the library may have a hold request placed on it at any of the above Circulation desks. Items may be recalled for Reserve use at any time and for other patron use after four weeks. Items with holds on them may not be renewed. When the requested item becomes available, it will be placed on the hold shelf and the requester notified to pick up the item within 10 days. If there are multiple requests for a single item, they will be honored in the order received.
Other alternatives for obtaining a checked-out item is to see if it is available through Link+, the University's connection to approximately 15 million items in an online consortium of California libraries, or through Interlibrary Loan. See elsewhere on the Library web page for more information.
What happens if an item is overdue or lost?
Failure to return materials will result in fines for all students and Courtesy patrons. Overdue books owned by APU are fined at 25¢ per day. Overdue Link+ books are fined at $1.00 per day. Overdue Media materials are fined at $1.00 per day. The maximum fine per item is $7.00 for APU owned books, and $15.00 for overdue Link+ books. Materials will be billed for replacement and processing fees assessed if materials are excessively overdue. Return of the material will cancel the replacement fee, but the accrued overdue fine must be paid, if applicable.
Lost materials must be reported immediately to the library. The minimum replacement cost for a lost book is $75.00 plus a $10.00 processing fee. The cost of replacing a Media item is $100.00 plus a $10.00 processing fee. The library will adjust the replacement bill upward if these figures do not cover the cost of the item. Borrowers are responsible for replacing or paying for the repair of materials damaged while out on loan and no longer usable. A borrower may replace a lost or damaged item with a duplicate copy acceptable to the library. The library reserves the right to determine if the duplicate is acceptable. After supplying the replacement copy, the borrower is still responsible for all processing fees.
Overdue fines, replacement bills and processing fees must be paid by cash or check at the Circulation Desk in the Stamps, Marshburn or Darling libraries. Outstanding debts will result in the suspension of all library privileges until the debt is resolved. Students may not transfer library fees to their University accounts.

What is a Regional Center Patron?
A Regional Center patron is one who is a student, faculty or staff member at one of the University's off-campus Regional Centers. Regional Center patrons have the same privileges and responsibilities as Azusa campus patrons, but their materials will be mailed to them from the Azusa campus libraries.
How do I borrow library materials?
All transactions between Regional Center patrons and the Azusa campus libraries go through the InterLibrary Loan/Document Delivery department at the Marshburn Library. Materials may be requested through an online form at the Library web page. Please call 626/815-6000 ext. 3272 for any other questions regarding these transactions.
Because of the limited resources at the Regional Center libraries, their materials are not available for checkout by Azusa campus patrons. Most materials are duplicated at the Azusa campus libraries. Check the catalog for the location of the materials you need.
How do I return or renew library materials?
Library materials must be received by mail in Marshburn Library on or before the due date.

What is a Courtesy Patron?
A Courtesy Patron is one who has been granted library privileges even though he or she is not affiliated with APU as a student, faculty or staff member. Although Courtesy Patrons may use the APU library resources, priority is given to the APU community. In addition, certain restrictions on database use and electronic resources may exist. Although we try to accommodate all library patrons, APU students, faculty and staff do have priority over Courtesy Patrons in the use of library facilities and services.
How can I obtain library borrowing privileges?
The "APU Guest Library Patron Registration" form, available at the Circulation Desk at the Stamps, Marshburn and Darling libraries, must be completed and presented with a photo ID. In addition, APU alumni must present an Alumni card (available from the Alumni Relations office) and area clergy must present a business card. SCATLA members must present the card issued by their school. SCELC members must present the form issued by their school. Community residents pay $20.00 per year for the privilege of using the libraries. The fee is waived for APU alumni, area clergy and SCATLA and SCELC members.
How do I borrow library books?
Courtesy Patrons must present a photo ID and a valid Courtesy Patron card to check out five items per visit. Date due bookmarks are available at the Circulation Desk. The APU library online catalog, APOLIS2, will also indicate the due date. The loan period for most materials is four weeks. Reserve materials and Media materials may not be checked out by Courtesy Patrons. Because of our contractual arrangements with the organizations involved, Courtesy patrons are not permitted to use the University's InterLibrary Loan or Link+ facilities.
Courtesy Patrons do not have access to online library account functions. Renewals can be requested by contacting the circulation desk at the Marshburn, Darling or Stamps Library.
