About the Fulbright Program
What are Fulbright Grants?
Fulbright Grants fund teaching, study, and travel abroad in all areas of the world. Applications will be considered in all fields, including the creative and performing arts, except as limited by individual countries.
Who is eligible?
Applicants must be U.S. citizens who have earned a Bachelor’s degree by the time the grant begins. Undergraduate APU students are encouraged to apply in their senior year; graduate students and alumni are always eligible to apply. Applicants must be in good health.
What is the award timetable?
Competition opens May 1 and closes October 20. The APU deadline for applications is October 1, 2008, 3 p.m. for the 2009-2010 academic year.
APU campus interviews take place in mid-October and qualifying applications are sent by October 16. National juries and country panels meet during November and December, and preliminary decisions are made by the end of January.
If recommended, candidate files are sent abroad for evaluation by host committees and final decisions are usually announced in April or May for awards beginning in late summer or early fall. Project timetables will vary by project and country.
What benefits are provided?
Both full- and fixed-sum awards provide transportation, a settling allowance, start-up funds, money for incidentals, a monthly stipend, tuition waivers where appropriate, and health insurance. Travel-only grants cover only the cost of transportation. You may not hold another grant which duplicates benefits.
How long do projects last?
Projects generally last 6-12 months, although some projects receive multiple-year funding.
