What is the Intern Grant Program?

The Intern Grant Program (IGP) coordinates a grant provided by the California Commission on Teacher Credentialing (CCTC) to an alternative certification program formally called the San Gabriel Valley Consortium. This consortium began in 1996 as Azusa Pacific University (APU) worked with school districts in the East San Gabriel Valley to respond to the Class Size Reduction Initiative and the resulting teacher shortage created in San Gabriel Valley elementary schools. The IGP continues to aid local teachers and districts, so long as a teacher shortage in California provides occasion for the grant.

Who is eligible to participate?

Any student who is teaching with a Multiple-Subject, Single-Subject, or Education Specialist Internship teaching credential is eligible to participate in the Intern Grant Program.

What are the benefits of being in the IGP?

The IGP receives grant monies for each registered participant. These monies benefit the participant in several ways:

Reimbursement for their intern credential application fee
Eligibility to be reimbursed for up to $500 of professional expenses per semester
Free workshops and materials
Financial support to the intern’s school district to fund teacher aids, such as support providers and substitute teachers
Provision for increased staff, faculty, and mentor support from the university

Additionally, intern credentials are beneficial in that they enable teachers to hold full-time positions while earning their certification. Earning this credential through APU provides the added opportunity of simultaneously earning a master’s degree in education.

How do I apply to the IGP?

Submit a completed Intern Consent Form, which may be obtained from a credential analyst with the credential application or from the IGP directly. No applicants can register for the grant without having submitted a fully completed Intern Consent Form to the IGP.
