Crime Prevention
Citizen Contacts
As part of our efforts to facilitate safety on campus, it occasionally becomes necessary for Campus Safety officers to stop members of the University community and ask for information. If an officer stops someone, it does not necessarily indicate that the person is a suspect. Cooperation in these interviews, usually by simply providing your name and proof of Azusa Pacific University affiliation, assists the Department of Campus Safety in promoting a safe and secure environment. We make every effort to be as sensitive and courteous as possible.
If you are stopped, you can expect the following; that the interview be conducted courteously; and that the questioning be as brief as possible.
Crime Awareness Programs
Rape Aggression Defense (R.A.D.) Program
Rape prevention and self-defense classes are offered at no cost to APU women. The class meets at least twice during a semester and will be announced in advance.
Whistle Program
This free service is available to all female students; however, men can participate as well. On-campus residents should see their RAs to receive a whistle and/or further information, and commuters should contact the Department of Campus Safety. Note: A $250 fine applies for misuse of the whistle.
Operation Gotcha!
The Department of Campus Safety has implemented Operation Gotcha. If an officer observes any items that could possibly be stolen, a Gotcha tag will be left on that item. The officer will not confiscate the item unless circumstances warrant such action. Computers, radios, calculators, and other expensive items will be taken to the Department of Campus Safety for safekeeping. This program is not intended to embarrass anyone, but to encourage students, faculty, and staff to be more cautious and aware.

Although an increase in crime is not anticipated, be aware that crime will occur on campus and prevention efforts may reduce criminal activity.
APU continues to increase efforts to prevent crime. During the past few years, the university has dramatically improved lighting in the parking lots and is planning additional changes. In addition, APU has added patrol officers to increase coverage of the residence hall areas and expanded the card key system.
Students play a major role in the prevention of on-campus crime. They should be cautious, careful, and alert to reduce the risk of theft or incidents that might compromise their safety.
