THIS YEAR: A high-impact player on the Cougar defensive front, Kenny Simmons is an experienced player ... Strong and smart about the game ... Rather quick for his size and is expected to frequently apply pressure to opposing quarterback ... Should be among team leaders in sacks and hurries.
2007: Appeared in 9 of the Cougars’ 11 games, starting 8 during his 2007 junior season ... Was fourth on the team with 55 tackles (16 solo) and second with 9 tackles for loss ... Was also second with 4.5 quarterback sacks ... Topped the team with 2 fumble recoveries ... Best game came in a win over Southern Nazarene when he tallied a season-high 10 tackles which included 1.5 sacks and a fumble recovery.
2006: Started the first 2 games of the season at linebacker before suffering a season-ending knee injury early in the game at Malone ... Had 5 tackles (4 solo) in the season opener at San Diego ... Granted a medical hardship to have the season restored for eligibility.
2005: Sat out the season with an injury.
2004: As a redshirt freshman, appeared in all 14 games, starting 7 ... Collected 40 tackles, including 9 for loss and 4 QB sacks ... Had a season-high 5 tackles in 4 different games ... Tallied 2 QB sacks in the win at Western New Mexico.
2003: Redshirted his first season at Azusa Pacific, attending classes while practicing with the team.
HIGH SCHOOL: Was a 3-year varsity standout at San Diego (Calif.) High, excelling as a running back his first 2 seasons before shining as a defensive back during his 2002 senior campaign ... As a 2001 junior rushed for 316 yards in a game, just a yard shy of Helix High’s Reggie Bush (2005 Heisman Trophy winner) for best rushing game in San Diego County that season ... Finished the season with 936 yards for the 8-2 Cavemen and was named all-league first team ... As a 2000 sophomore was named the team’s most improved after rushing for 836 yards which included a single-game best of 210 yards and was named team offensive MVP ... Also lettered 2 seasons in basketball (guard), including his sophomore season when he averaged 8 points a game ... Served 2 years on ASB at San Diego.
