Azusa Pacific University's required TOEFL scores are subject to change.

The TOEFL requirement can be waived if:

  • You have attended a school for the past two years (48 units) whose medium of instruction is English.
  • You must be able to provide verification that the school did teach in English and that you were not enrolled in any English support courses, such as ESL classes, during that time.

**The TOEFL requirement for the Nursing programs cannot be waived.

If, while in classes, it is determined that the student's ability to communicate and participate in English is below the necessary standard, a teacher may refer him/her to the department chairperson who can require him/her to enroll in a noncredit program, at the student's expense. This program will be specifically designed to enable the student to raise his/her English communication ability.

International students are encouraged to submit a score on the Test of Written English with their application materials. If this is not submitted prior to admission, students may be required to take a written English assessment upon arrival at the university. Students whose English skills are not adequate for graduate study in their chosen field may be required to take, either prior to or concurrently with courses in their department, coursework to develop their written and/or spoken skills in English.

Option 2: Study at the American Language and Culture Institute (Intensive English Program)

The American Language and Culture Institute (ALCI) offers six levels. Each level can be completed in one semester. You will be placed in the appropriate level upon admission. In Levels 5 and 6, you may take several classes for credit towards your degree. This is only if you have already been accepted into APU as a graduate student.

In order to apply for conditional admission into a graduate program, applicants must submit a completed ALCI application and the International Graduate Application for Admission (including program-specific application requirements).

Applicants for the Physical Therapy (DPT), Higher Education (Ph.D.), Higher Education Leadership (Ed.D.), Educational Leadership, K-12 (Ed.D.), and Clinical Psychology (Psy.D.) programs are not eligible for conditional admission through ALCI.

The ALCI application is available at http://www.apu.edu.offcampus.resources.apu.edu/apply/pdfs/app_int_alci.pdf.

Departmental Interview
May be arranged by phone or after arrival for applicants who live outside the United States.

Additional Items Required for a Specific Graduate Major
Please refer to Department Specific Application Procedures.

Writing Sample Essay
Computer-Based (CBT) TOEFL
A "writing sample" essay is given as part of the CBT TOEFL test. For regular admission, in addition to the overall TOEFL score, a score of 5 on the essay is required (6 for computer science and the doctoral programs). If you do not reach the required score, you will need to write another essay upon arrival at the university. This essay will be assessed and results will determine your English writing placement and whether or not you will need to take an English writing class while at APU.

Paper-Based (PBT) TOEFL
The writing sample is not included in the PBT TOEFL. Therefore, an applicant must submit an essay based on the following: a topic related to his/her major/profession, 150-300 words in length, and written and edited by the applicant only. Only typed essays will be accepted. Based on the essay, an applicant will be given a preliminary English writing placement. However, once an applicant arrives at APU, he/she will be asked to write another essay which will be compared to the first one. This comparison will determine if he/she will need to take an English writing class at APU.
