Choosing a Major

Choosing a major can seem like a daunting task. Here are some helpful suggestions to get you on your way to determining your field of study.

  1. Explore a major that interests you by meeting with a faculty member in that area. This is your chance to ask questions! A faculty member can provide you with more information about the requirements, trends, and the career possibilities within their department.
  2. Make an appointment with the Office of Career Services to discuss your interests, talents, and abilities and how those can lead you to the right career field.
  3. Enroll in Calling, major and career exploration (LDRS 103). This course is designed to help students identify and develop their career paths. Emphasis is on identifying and developing gifts and talents, deciding on a major and career path, and undertaking a job search.
  4. Take an entry-level class in the major you are considering. If you decide that the major is not for you, the units can still be counted towards your total units for graduation. (Remember to check for prerequisites.)
  5. Review the Undergraduate Catalog for information about the major in which you are interested, paying specific attention to the “career opportunities” and “requirements for the major” sections.
  6. Talk with fellow students who have chosen the major you are considering.
  7. Interview someone who is working in a career field that interests you and see what major they recommend.
